Memories Like Butterfly Wings Still Wet From The Rain
For this work, I challenged myself to work solely with a Polaroid camera. The original images are photos documenting art in other mediums I have made, self-portraits and sentimental items relating to the themes of the project. I separated and transferred the photo emulsions onto watercolour paper, and after they were dry, I scanned them in high resolution and made adjustments in post-production to invert the positives. Starting this project I didn’t have a final idea or visualization in mind, but I knew I wanted to have a focus on the physical object and making process.
My intention is to create figurative and abstract representation of my memories and self-perceptions within a limited medium. I discuss and bring forward ideas about nostalgia and memories; how in my alternate reality there exists past versions of myself in which I am attempting to explore through these creations and recreations. I believe there is a reality in memory, existing separately from and closely tied to my perception of the past. These memories and past selves are delicate, yet tangible; like butterfly wings, I can feel them in my hands.
